Highway Patrol photographs, 1936, 1957.

This collection consists of three photographs. Two of these photographs were probably taken the same day in 1936. One shows forty officers in uniform with their motorcycles on the Capitol lawn along with Gov. Bibb Graves, Chief Walter K. McAdory, and Captain E. Potter Smith. The other, also on the Capitol lawn, shows Chief McAdory, Capt. Smith, and five uniformed officers with two motorcycles and an Alabama Highway Patrol car. The third photograph shows the twenty-third reunion of the Charter Club members of the Highway Patrol on December 5, 1957, in Montgomery, Ala. Depicted are: Sergeant W. H. Moody, Earl Henley, Director W. V. Lyerly, Chief Bankhead Bates, Sergeant Charles E. O'Gwynn, Grady Ford, N. W. Kimbrough, Jake Kreis, W. B. Ozley, Capt. Charlie Barrett, Roy Grubbs, T. I. Hutto, and Norman D. Bamberger.

The Alabama Highway Patrol was created on December 5, 1935, by Governor Bibb Graves. Prior to this, twelve "highway officers" who were responsible for statewide enforcement of highway laws had worked under the auspices of the State Highway Department during Gov. Benjamin Miller's term. Recognizing the inadequacy of this situation, Gov. Graves created the Highway Patrol and increased the number of officers from twelve to seventy-five.
